Inline XBRL for CAFRs

Electronic delivery of government financial statements via PDF was a great innovation. But it is no longer the 1990s. Financial report consumers should be able to work interactively with financial data online and should be able to smoothly download key financial results into the software of their choice. These are the capabilities Inline XBRL can bring to public sector financial reporting.

What is Inline XBRL?

Inline XBRL are just web pages – built in HTML – that include special financial tags that are normally hidden in the web browser. Our samples are displayed in a special viewer, designed by the Securities and Exchange Commission, that includes Javascipt code that highlights tagged items.  Simple parsing programs can extract and process the data in these tags.  A open source parsing script written in Python is available here.
